Why Netflix goes black when you screen mirror (DRM, explained)

Updated 2026-10-23

You start mirroring, open Netflix, and the car screen goes black, sometimes with the sound still playing. Nothing is broken. It's copy protection doing exactly what it's meant to do, and it affects every screen mirroring app the same way.

What's happening

Streaming services encrypt their video with DRM (digital rights management). On iPhone, iPad and Mac, that's Apple's FairPlay. The decrypted picture goes straight to your own display, and the operating system keeps it out of anything that captures the screen: screen recordings, screenshots and screen sharing all get a black rectangle where the video should be.

Screen mirroring apps, ScreenRide included, work by capturing your screen with Apple's own screen-recording tools (ReplayKit on iPhone, ScreenCaptureKit on Mac) and sending it to the car. So they receive the same black rectangle. There's no setting to change; it's the same protection that stops you from screen-recording a movie.

Which apps are affected

Usually black when mirroredUsually mirrors fine
Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV, Prime Video, HBO Max, Hulu, and other paid streamingOrdinary YouTube videos, social video apps, maps, browsers
Paid or rented movies in most appsYour own photos and videos

Exact behavior varies by app and can change with updates. Other mirroring apps say the same; TslaMirror's listing, for example, names Netflix, Apple TV, YouTube TV, Prime Video and Hulu as unsupported.

How to watch them in a Tesla instead

Use the car itself. Tesla Theater includes Netflix, YouTube, Hulu and Disney+, and in 2026 Tesla began opening more services, such as Apple TV and HBO Max, in a full-screen, app-like view from the browser. These play natively, in better quality than any mirror, while the car is in Park.

Your own videos play in full quality

Videos and photos you shot yourself aren't copy-protected. ScreenRide's content mode sends the file itself to the car instead of recording the screen, so it plays in full quality, and you can pause or seek from the phone or the car.

Be wary of apps or tools that promise to "bypass" the black screen. Getting around DRM breaks the streaming services' terms and may break the law where you live, and those tools are a common source of malware.

Questions

Is there a way to mirror Netflix without a black screen?

Not legitimately. The black screen is the copy protection working as designed. Tools that claim to get around it break the services' terms. In a Tesla, use Netflix in Tesla Theater while parked.

Why do I still hear the sound?

The protection mainly targets the video picture. Depending on the app, sound may still come through while the picture stays black.

Does YouTube work with mirroring?

Ordinary YouTube videos usually mirror fine. Paid movies and some premium content on YouTube can be copy-protected and appear black.
