How to mirror your iPhone to a Tesla (2026 guide)

Updated 2026-10-23

Tesla still doesn't support Apple CarPlay, so there's no button in the car that puts your iPhone on the screen. There are three practical ways to do it anyway. This guide explains how each works, what it costs, and how to make mirroring feel instant instead of laggy.

The short version

Why it isn't built in

Most new cars get the iPhone onto the dashboard through CarPlay. Tesla has never shipped it. Bloomberg reported in late 2025 that Tesla was working on CarPlay support, and in February 2026 that the work had been held up; the 2026 spring software update still didn't include it. As of October 2026 there's no release date.

That leaves one open door: the car's web browser. Every method below, including the adapters, ends up showing your iPhone in that browser.

Option 1: a browser mirroring app

This is the approach most owners use. The app runs a small video server on your iPhone, the car joins your iPhone's Personal Hotspot, and you open a page in the car's browser that plays the stream. Nothing is plugged into the car and nothing goes through the internet.

Apps in this category include ScreenRide (ours), TslaMirror, AirTesla and Car Cast. They differ in a few ways worth checking:

Setting it up with ScreenRide

  1. On your iPhone, open Settings → Personal Hotspot, turn it on, and turn Maximize Compatibility off.
  2. Join the hotspot from the car (Wi-Fi settings on the touchscreen). Your iPhone itself must not be connected to another Wi-Fi network.
  3. Open ScreenRide and tap Start, then start the screen broadcast.
  4. In the car's browser, go to car.screenride.net and enter the 4-digit code shown in the app. The car remembers you after the first time.

Option 2: a CarPlay adapter

Several companies sell boxes for Teslas that plug into a USB port in the center console. Going by one vendor's own description, the box pairs with your iPhone over Bluetooth, creates its own Wi-Fi network for the car to join, and you open the vendor's web page in the car's browser to see a CarPlay interface. Prices we saw ranged from about $75 to $140.

The appeal is the familiar CarPlay layout for maps, music and messages. The trade-offs are the extra hardware, the car's Wi-Fi being tied up by the adapter's network, and occasional reconnection delays that some reviews mention. It shows CarPlay apps, not your full iPhone screen.

Option 3: use Tesla's built-in apps

If what you want is a movie or a show, check Tesla Theater first. It includes Netflix, YouTube, Hulu and Disney+, and in 2026 Tesla started giving more streaming services a full-screen, app-like view in the browser. These play natively while parked, with better quality than any mirror. Copy-protected services won't mirror anyway: they show a black screen through every mirroring app (here's why).

How to make mirroring smooth

Almost every "it's laggy" complaint comes down to the hotspot. In our own tests in the car, a hotspot running in 2.4 GHz mode had a round-trip time of more than 1.3 seconds and dropped 968 frames in a short session. Switching the same iPhone to 5 GHz brought the round trip down to about 15 ms, with about 8 ms to decode each frame in the car.

Questions

Do I need an adapter to mirror my iPhone to a Tesla?

No. Browser-based mirroring apps use your iPhone's Personal Hotspot and the car's built-in browser, so nothing plugs into the car. Adapters are a separate option if you specifically want the CarPlay interface.

Can I mirror while driving?

Tesla only plays video in the browser while the car is in Park, so plan on mirroring when parked or for passengers. Follow local laws.

Does mirroring use my cellular data?

The picture and sound travel over the hotspot between your phone and the car, not the internet. But while the car is joined to your hotspot, its own traffic, like maps or a software update, can use your plan.

Which Teslas work?

Browser-based mirroring needs a car whose browser can play video: Model 3, Model Y, Cybertruck, and Model S or X with the MCU2 computer or newer. Early Model S and X with the original MCU1 can't.
